Holbox Island Hotels
Isla Holbox is a charming island located 7 miles north of the upper tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, about 2 ½ hours NW of Cancun. It is approximately 25 miles long and 1 mile wide, and has 34 kilometers of white shell-filled isolated beaches. Separated from the main coast of Mexico by a shallow lagoon, it is home to thousands of pelicans, flamingos and other diverse wildlife. It is the ideal place for long walks on the beach as the entire island is made up of shells and sand and it is surrounded by emerald waters. Holbox is considered a virgin tourist destination because of its low level of outside visitors, and despite the island’s natural beauty, inaccessibility has left it unspoiled by mass tourism.
Holbox has a friendly population of approximately 1,600, most of whom make their living fishing, although most of the island remains uninhabited. It is a peaceful town, where life moves at a slow rhythm. Escape from the hectic, modern world and relax in your hammock in this heavenly village. You can also rent a bike, motorcycle, or golf cart to get around this unique town. A refreshing sea breeze is constantly blowing.
Whale, or "domino" Sharks gather just off the coast of Holbox each May through September to feed on the plankton rich waters created by the nutrient currents of the Gulf, Caribbean, and the Atlantic. Holbox has now been designated THE top place in the World to see and swim with the ocean's largest fish. Swimming with Whale Sharks is sure to be a truly incredible and unforgettable experience.
