Playa del Carmen is where it all started for The Turquoise Reef Group. Back in the early 1980's we were taking reservations via teletype machines and the small Playa del Carmen hotel we worked with was Shangri la Caribe (now Mahekal Beach Resort) and consisted of only 3 beachfront cabanas! Back then the small hotel was making 2-3 trips a day to Cancun for ice and other needed supplies.
Times have certainly changed over the years and Playa del Carmen has grown into a major tourist destination and bustling small city on the Yucatan's Caribbean coast. The number of Playa del Carmen hotels has also grown exponentially over the years but we have always remained true to our roots by selecting only the finest small hotels that offer a more authentic Mayan Mexican Caribbean experience.
While there are many different Yucatan hotels today; including many mega resorts that offer all-inclusive style vacations; they tend to be captive in nature and do little to reveal the rich beauty and culture of the region!
