Our boutique hotels have been handpicked as well to provide a unique Mexican experience for you and all of your guests. Our hotels will not schedule another wedding on the same day as your wedding, making your wedding the exclusive wedding party at the hotel. The Turquoise Reef Group has local representatives in Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, Mexico, that are available to you and your family if you need anything. Our local representatives live in Tulum, Mexico full time, and their telephone number is posted on all of your guests’ itineraries. You may leave that number with family members at home in case they need to get a hold of you while you are in Mexico.

We strive to make keeping track of your wedding guests as simple as possible by allowing you to use our booking widget on your own personal wedding website, so that all of your guests book through one location for better ease in tracking, planning and cohesiveness. Your guests may also book through the Mexico Holiday site with a private group code assigned to your wedding. You may use this widget or private group code as your RSVP on your invitations.

Getting married in a foreign country may seem daunting, but when you have a team of professionals behind you to help you through the preparation and planning, you can rest assure that the correct steps will be followed to ensure a relaxing, memorable day for everyone.You may be wondering if a marriage in Mexico will be recognized in the United States as legal and we can tell you that with the correct documents, it absolutely is.

We have done our homework to make sure that you come to Mexico prepared and go home with everything you need to be documented as legally married. Since all of our hotels are located in the state of Quintana Roo, we follow the legal marriage laws set forth by Quintana Roo, Mexico.There are a few steps that need to be taken care of before you arrive in Mexico, and a couple more while you are in Mexico, and after that, it’s your day!

You should plan on arriving in Mexico about 4 days before your ceremony to complete the necessary filings. Your documents will be Fed Ex’d back to you a few weeks after your wedding, you do not need to remain in Mexico while they are being recorded.

Preparation At Home

Certified Birth Certificates

You will each need to be at least 18 years of age to get married in Mexico without parental consent.

With parental consent, boys must be 16, and girls must be 14.

A certified birth certificate must be provided proving your age, and translated into Spanish by an approved translator. If you would like this done in the United States, contact your nearest Mexican Consulate to find an approved translator for fees and details. The principal Mexican Consulate is located in Washington D.C., but there are state agencies as well.

If you cannot find someone in your area to translate your certified birth certificate, we can have it translated into Spanish for you when you arrive, and notarized.

Passports

You will each need to bring your passport that has been valid for at least 6 months, along with a copy of the first page and the last page.

Travel Permit/Visa

A valid travel permit must also be provided as part of your documentation to get married in Mexico. Your travel permit will be given to you by a steward on your airline to fill out before landing in the Cancun Airport. This travel permit / visa, must be kept with you until you get back into the United States. If you are driving into the country, a permit will be given to you at the border.

Four Witnesses

You will need to have 4 witnesses present at your wedding, so you will want to decide who you would like to bring with you as your witnesses in Mexico. Your witnesses will also need valid passports along with a copy of the first and last page, and their travel permits/visas. If you are not planning on bringing anyone with you, your wedding coordinator will arrange for four local residents to be present at your wedding as witnesses.

If You Have Already Been Married

If you have already been married, you must be able to provide proof of your marriage dissolution by providing a copy of your Divorce Decree. This Divorce Decree will also need to be translated into Spanish and notarized. Women who have been previously married, may not re-marry for 300 calendar days following the date of the divorce decree, unless during that time, you have given birth or can prove that you are not pregnant through a doctors blood test. If You Are WidowedIf either party has been widowed, a copy of the Death Certificate must be provided. This document also needs to be translated in Spanish and notarized.

Preparation In Mexico Upon Arrival

Blood Test

A blood test will need to be done for both the bride and groom locally. Our wedding coordinator can tell you where to go to have this done. Results take 24- 48 hours. Since the tests are done in Mexico, the results will be in Spanish as required. You can get your pregnancy test done at this time as well if you need to.

Marriage Application Form

Your wedding coordinator will get you the necessary Marriage Applicaton Form to be filled out. You will need to specify whether you will get married under joint or separate property on this form so make sure you know the laws of the state you live in before you make this choice.

Once you have your Marriage Application Form filled out along with the other required documents, your wedding coordinator will gather all of your documents together, make sure they are properly translated into Spanish, and notarized as required. They will pay the Marriage Application Fees, and you are ready for your ceremony!

Whether you have a religious ceremony, or a civil ceremony, only the civil ceremony is recognized as legal in Mexico. You can certainly have both at the same time, but you cannot omit the civil ceremony. Your wedding coordinator will Fed Ex your certified Marriage Certificate, or the Acta de Matrimonio, to you in the United States once it has been recorded. Once you receive this document in the mail, a few weeks later, you will want to take this to your local government office to have it recorded in the state you live in as well.
