Chichen Itza: One of the Seven Wonders of the World

 

Chichen Itza, meaning “at the mouth of the well of the Itza”, is an archaeological site where you can fully appreciate Mayan culture.   Chichen Itza covers an area of six square miles and is known to be most important site to the Mayan culture.  The Group of 1,000 Columns is an arcade built with a series of columns that covers a surface area of 363 sq. feet.  Among the most important constructions at this site is the Juego de Pelota, the largest ball court in Mesoamerica at 545 by 232 feet.  Another impressive structure is the Observatory, a sophisticated structure that allows one to appreciate the scientific and astronomical accomplishments of the Mayans.  

Open daily from 8:00 to 5:00.   Travel time to Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.  Admission into Chichen Itza is around $10 and it is recommended to arrive just after the 8 am opening to avoid the crowds.  Also, at the entrance there is a visitor’s center where you can find restrooms, cafeterias, bookshops and a small museum.
